I'm aware it's rare, even in the UK where I am, but it has requested in the job advert that my covering letter be hand written. My handwriting isn't perfect, and I would much rather type it, but there you go.

Should I use lined paper? Or draw 1cm lines on blank paper in pencil, then erase them?

Definitely don't use lined paper. That will be totally unprofessional. You need to do what the first guy said. that seems like the best option.

Lay plain paper over a piece of lined paper. You can now write your letter evenly because you can see the lines through the plain paper. Do not use lined paper or erase, both would look tacky.

I used to put lined paper underneath a blank sheet of paper. That way you can still see the lines and don't have to bother erasing. Your paper should look just as neat.

If an employer asked me to hand write a cover letter.. I would write it on a cocktail napkin or a postcard. That's just me being creative though. (Obviously, Corporate America isn't for me)

I agree with Mattie! Put lined paper below the paper you write on. Use paper clips if you need to to keep it straight.

It will look very good that way.
Good luck!
