I have a 3 ft tank that has two guppies, 1 neon tetra,1 gourami, two black skirt tetras and 1 betta fish and some snails. This morning I found my gourami half-floating in the tank surface. Seems like it is gasping for air. I moved it to a bowl and put some anti bacterial medicine and salt. You can see it here:

Theres probably nothing for me to do now. But what cud b the reason? The other fish seems to be doing fine. Although one of my snails died two weeks back. If something is wrong with the water, shudn't the neon tetra be affected before any other fish? I cannot tell you about water parameters because I dont hv test kits.

Gouramis are extremely forgiving fish and one of the best fish for beginners. I doubt that it is ammonia poisoning, your Neon would have died long before if your ammonia was too high. It is much more likely constipation. If your fish has swelling around the abdomen, is "gasping" for air, having trouble swimming (either floating or sinking), and not moving, it is almost certainly the case. To "unblock" your fish, just stop feeding it for a day or two and let it to to pass, or give it some live or frozen food. It will likely refuse to eat, so giving it any food isn't terribly logical, but some will. There is no reason to add the medicine, but you should keep it in the bowl with salt. The salt may actually help it pass. Contact me if you have any questions.

Your fish looks like it got beat up, I'd have to say the betta would be your suspect, they will attack fish that look similar to them, longer fins and bright colors, you did the right thing by putting him in a hospital bowl, there is a chance he'll make it, It relly doesn't sound like the water, the tetras would have went before the gourami.Do a 25% water change just in case.

When mine did that I read some books that said to start feeding it live food for a few days. It seems that they get indigestion and it causes this.

sounds like you have problems with to much ammonia in your tank, test kits are a must and you need to buy one today and test your nitrite, nitrate, and ammonia, gouramis are not hardy fish and are prone to stress and disease and are very difficult to keep.
