It depends on the market. In my experience, there is not a big variation on salary. When one increases salary, the rest follow in due course. For retail, the difference between the highest and lowest salary in the Chicago market is less than $10,000.

It varies GREATLY from area to area. In my area (Central Ohio) you make much more money as a hospital pharmacist. However, in other areas of the country, you can make much more as a retail pharmacist.

However, most chains will be competitive in the same area. You'll make about the same base pay, so look for other things that effect your overall take-home pay. Union dues, benefits costs, parking fees (if you're in a big city) - these things will usually make the difference in one place's pay over another.
