If you are getting sick on a regular basis, or are getting sick and finding it hard to recover than it is good to take a little bit of quiet time...about 30 min. to just breathe and ask yourself what you need to do. You mentioned that you were not taking proper diet and nutrition. It is hard to change eating habits. Yet it may be beneficial to add a few very nourishing foods to your regular diet and slowly eliminate the things you know are compromising your health.
Some nourishing foods that you could start with are salads, steamed greens are very nourishing! Lentils are also nourishing and are known to build immunity. Making a chicken or beef broth and adding miso is very nourishing. Broths made from animals that are raised naturally contain many trace minerals and vitamins that cannot be found in any other food source. These are all suggestions given to me by a very effective herbalist and natural doctor.
Make sure you are getting a bit of rest during each day. It is a shame that our culture does not practice siesta!!
Herbs that can restore immunity besides echinacea are NETTLES, RED CLOVER, ELDERBERRY, and DANDELION. Hope that some of these suggestions are useful!!

An excellent folk remedy and something that provides immediate relief is hydrogen peroxide, especially for ear infections! Here's how to effectively use it: lay on one side, with a towel wrapped around your neck, your infected ear upwards, and pour a capful of the liquid into your ear canal (or have someone else do it, it's quite disconcerting at first). I find the fizzy, bubbly sensation enjoyable although you might not like it. When the liquid becomes warm to hot, which it should if you have a bad infection, simply tilt your head over and dump the liquid into the towel. Keep doing that until the liquid does not bubble or become warm, and then clean your ears (or have a nurse do it, but who actually goes to the trouble). Hydrogen peroxide mixed with water also makes a great mouthwash. Hope your health improves!

Increase Immunity/Bacterial Resistance
Lactic acid bacteria have been shown to enhance immune response, increasing resistance to infection. Wakunaga's Bifidobacteria and L. acidophilus have been shown to activate macrophages which produce substances that suppress harmful bacteria. In addition, L. acidophilus has been shown to improve macrophage phagocytic capacity, or the ability of these immune cells to engulf and remove foreign organisms. Further, supplementation of lactobacillus in diets has been shown to enhance the clearance or removal of the intraveniously injected gram-negative bacterium, E.coli.
L. acidophilus intake also doubled the amount of Kupffer (immune) cells, which are responsible for the clearance of circulating bacteria.16 Consumption of L. acidophilus and B. bifidum together caused a four-fold increase in IgA (Immunoglobulin A) against Salmonella typhi Ty21a when human subjects consumed bacteria prior to infection with this organism.
Secretory IgA is an immunoglobulin which protects the mucosal lining of the intestinal tract by coating pathogens and hindering their attachment to the mucosa. Even if live bacteria reach the intestines as dead bacteria, or as live bacteria which have died from exposure to gastric acid, bile or intestinal juice, the bacteria components, such as the cell walls of the lactic acid bacteria, are absorbed into the body, thus enhancing the defense mechanism.

The whole immune system is maintained by an elegant series of regulatory cells, proteins, and other molecular regulators.
To indiscriminately disrupt ("boost") any part of this network would be disastrous to the host. The concept of "boosting" the immune system is actually part of what occurs in autoimmune diseases. So, No.1 you can't really "boost" your immune system. No.2 you don't WANT to as you then become prone to arthritis, diabetes, asthma et. etc., all caused by an immune system which is TOO strong !

Have you tried probiotics? they seem to help. Maybe when you catch an infection, like a sore throat, you can slam a garlic clove to kill it. Worked for me when I feel that soreness before a cold normally hits.
Vitamin C is always highly recommended. It thins the mucous in your throat, so the virus can't get stuck as easy.
lymphatic drainage is important, and it kind of goes a long with exercise, so study up on them.
