Go to a local elementary school, volunteer to help. Either read to the kids, share an art project.....anything positive.
Become a Big Sister...in the Big Brother program.
Donate clothes (coats & shoes) to foster care kids.
Feed a homeless kid, mentor them if they're willing.
Coach a kids sports team.
Join "neighborhood watch program" and put a little house sign in your front window.
Go to the childrens hospital, bring a positive attitude.
Help out or start a local toy drive for needy kids during the holidays.
If you look for ways to help........you'll find them. But mostly just be available, be honest and be positive.
Personally, I volunteer at my daughters school.....and specialize in arts.

I work with a small non-profit group based in my hometown. We raise money with annual events and in turn, donate the proceeds to educational needs at our schools.
There are many things teachers want/need to use in the classrooms that are simply not in their budgets and we strive to fulfill those needs. Each year, we accept grant requests from educators and while we cannot fill them all, we do fill as many as possible. All requests are reviewed and discussed by the volunteers and there are often times that we may not be able to donate the entire requested amount but part of it (example, this year we gave X amount to the junior high school cheerleaders).
We do try to donate to groups that are willing to give their time to help us. If we can see that they are trying to raise money on their own, we are more inclined to help. Kind of helping those who help themselves.
It benefits my kids who are educated in these schools. For example, the "Weekly Readers" provided to my son's K-5 classes were purchased with money I helped raise.

I volunteer for an organization called The Victim Center. I assist victims and families of violent crimes. I will meet victims at the hospital, jail, crime scene, etc. to basically provide them a source of comfort and support. I give them information for things such as AIDS testing, where to file an ex parte, locations of shelters, and we also provide free counseling. I love it. There are lots of things you can do in your own community to help. Check the local paper because there are always ads seeking volunteers. Or check for volunteer organizations in your local phone book.

That's very cool. I just started working at my company and they have a robot building event with students. I am considering participating.
I sometimes volunteer at the animal shelter. It breaks my heart to see a hungry cat outside my patio in the middle of the winter.

I love children and love to give them advice. I think that we owe it to our younger peeps to give them and show them the way in life, if you have something to give you should give it or live with the consequences in the actions that you perceive. I think if you have been threw it then you should be able to give what matters and that's your opinion. Our kids need us and we can't let them down.. Right?
