Are they supporting it in any way? Financially, morally, etc. ? And do they know of the terrible concequences of the shark-fin industry, not only due to the pain the poor marine animals have to suffer, but also on the wider ecological scale?

I wouldn't think so because it is illegal in most places unless the sharks are already dead. Not many people actually know about how bad shark poaching is, some species are nearly endangered and some nearly extinct because of people killing them for fins. Its a terrible business, there only purpose is to kill innocent sea creatures for little profit and it needs to stop.

Sharks have a pretty primitive nervous system; they do not have the mental capacity to "suffer." As humans we feel disgust at the idea of releasing a deliberately maimed animal back into the wild, but suffering is not an issue in this case.
If important populations of sharks are being adversely affected by shark harvesting, then this is the issue that needs to be addressed. Shark fishing should be regulated just like any other fishing.
