In a 55 gallon tank with 2 large balas (max 6in.),2 small balas (2in.),3 red finned sharks and 2 large sucker fish,we found the fish to looked to have ich after stressing them when my wife changed 100% of water and gravel.(Overcrouding will be addressed, but these fish were fine prior to the change.)We found online that salt is the best cure for the parasite,BUT...I'm an idiot.I used table salt with iodine to only find later that iodine will kill my fish.I assumed that the tank, being 55 gal capacity when empty,is closer to 50-45 gal with gravel, fixtures, fish, etc.
I put in 15 tsp of iodized salt (idiot) mixed with hot water. The fish seem ok right now,but will I wake up with a tank of floaters or do you think the mixture might be too weak to hurt them?
All help will be appreciated.
BTW,tsp= teaspoon,not tablespoon

Table salt is a great way to cure ick (NOT SEA SALT). 15 teaspoons is not very much to treat even a small tank. Generally, you use one teaspoon per gallon of water, but I have successfully used one cup of salt per 10 gallons in the past. The amount of iodine in that small bit of salt will not harm your fish, but if you want to play it safe, vacuum the gravel, removing about 30% of the water. Refill the tank and add 2 cups of UN-iodized salt. Contact me if you have any questions.

I would proberly do a majority water change again, i have seen some one put table salt in and kill everything. you are best to use sea salt, with no anti-caking agents or iodine.
Your not stupid, just that you didnt know. but you do now.
Good luck
Ps salt is good if the fish are stressing or about to be stressed as a cure for ich, id still use a multi pourpose treatment to cure the ich

I had salt water fish and they are really delicate .....your best bet.is to do a water change.........siphon off half of the water in there, check the chemicals with your kits, and add bottled water - warm of course- and then alter the salt concentration.........OR if you have another tank up and running- transfer all breathing fish there now..........
