Abu is a very intelligent monkey and seems to be quite thief like or thievious (actual word look it up). I was wondering if in theory I had a monkey would he steal things or would I have to theoretically teach him this. This is all in theory of course.

I don't think they steal in the sense of what we consider stealing. I think they are like dogs. When a dog runs away he doesn't worry about the implications of the pain in the butt it is for you to go around trying to find him. He does it out of an innate desire.

I think another part of it, is that it gets us riled up and for some reason monkeys like to have the attention on them.

Well Monkey Dude, I believe that certain types of monkeys, more along the lines of your smaller monkeys (etc. spider monkeys) well indeed steal without teachings. I own a Spider Monkey myself and have been late to work many times because he has taken my pants. Not only will he steal my pants, but he will also venture across my apartment building and steal sugar packets off of my neighbors coffee table. So be careful, they can and will steal.

From what I have read and heard they are quite selfish, no one has to teach them to steal.
Though I have never had a monkey......

Monkeys don't moralize they just take what they can if they want to.
