Catholics have been casting out demons ever since Jesus and the Apostles did it.
Modern psychology says that most of the people who had demons cast out of them were probably miraculously cured from schizophrenia and other mental illnesses. But their cures were still miracles.
The Catholic Church believes that real demonic possessions are rare but possible, so they keep a few exorcists around just in case.
The Church has guidelines in place to take great care to exhaust psychological options before calling in an exorcist.
For more information, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church, sections 1673: http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text/pt2sect2chpt4.htm#1673
Anglicanism, several Protestant denominations, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons), Judaism, Hinduism, Scientology, and Islam also practice some kind of exorcism. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exorcism

Actually not only Catholic priests are called upon to perform exorcisms. If you've ever been to a revival or prayer meeting you will see pastors and even lay people expelling demons by the thousands... Demons of alcoholism, demons of sloth, demons of whatever. You'd think the world would have been reformed by now. Unfortunately too often we blame demons for our own evil.
A Catholic priest will only be called to perform an exorcism by his Bishop. This will be only after the Bishop has investigated the case and determined that it is an authentic case of demonic possession. The priest must have already been trained in exorcism. He will be asked to take a week or so to prepare for the exorcism. He will not be alone. When the actual exorcism is to take place an entire community of Religious sisters or brothers will be asked to pray non-stop for the success of the exorcism. So you see, it is not a simple matter of calling for an exorcism.
Best.

They have a history of dealing with exorcism and even have a manual of rituals to deal with demonic possession. So they come off as the professionals compared to others.
However, catholic priests - and the majority of priests don't have the qualification to perform a proper exorcism - are not the only ones who perform exorcism. Imams perform exorcism in Muslim countries for example. Shamans of various native religions also do so.

They are the only ones who believe in demonic possession...and that's only the traditional ones. Younger priests are not into the whole exorcism thing

Makes for better movies. I'd say Catholicism as a mind-set makes for the best horror movies by far. I mean, the battles of demons and angels for our immortal souls, it makes great story lines.

Because is their invention in the first place.
Other cultures do exorcisms too but not with the protocol and reading and water spraying customs.

"Vicar" means "deputy", and is utilized in one in each of those distinctive techniques over historical past. i'm not completely particular why the Anglicans settled on it as a regularly occurring term for his or her pastors. The Pope is likewise prevalent as "the vicar of St Peter" or "the vicar of Christ", indicating that he's a deputy here in the worldwide. Catholic clergymen are called "father" for the comparable reason that the Apostles have been called "father" via those that they had taught approximately Christ. because of the fact, as St Paul places it in one million Corinthians, they are non secular fathers to those they have extra to the hot lifestyles in Christ.

Protestants don't have a system set up to deal with them. And they don't believe in using holy water, which is very effective, or in asking the mother of our Lord for her prayers, which is also very effective, according to exorcists.
