With everything threaded according to the directions and about 6" of thread extra from the needle and 6" extra from the bobbin ...
close stuff up (bobbin plate so it doesn't trap the thread or whatever)
without fabric in place, with the foot lowered, with the loose end of the spool thread secured by your left hand, use right hand to rotate the control wheel to go forward for one stitch. This should capture the loose end of the bobbin thread so it can be pulled up/out.
then you can insert fabric and hold both ends of the threads as you being stitching in normal fashion.

Always leave enough extra thread for hold-as-you-begin when you clip pieces off/away. It's efficient to stitch several things one after another to be able to skip the individual holding which only needs to be done when beginning with loose threads.

If this doesn't do it, you may have the tension problems previously suggested.

Before you start stitching, you have to hold the two thread tails (bobbin and top thread) until you've taken the first few stitches. Just pull out a couple of inches of the threads and hold them towards the rear of the machine as you begin stitching. This prevents the top thread from being pulled into the bobbin area.

When this happens to me, it is usually because the bobbin thread has slipped out of the little groove. Make sure you load the bobbin according to directions and get it all the way down into the slot. Use a clean paintbrush to get the lint and junk out of the area where the bobbin fits into the machine.

Has it had a yearly tune up? It'll never work right if it doen't get a cleaning and tune up every year.

it sounds like the problem is how you are loading your bobbin. make sure the thread is coming off the bobbin the right way, and going in the right groove.
