How do I find the degree of these polynomials?

4x^2 + 12xyz

And

3x^4y^2 - 5x^2y + 3

I think you need to set which variable is being considered to be analyzed. Check out the highest power the variable is being assigned.

4x^2 + 12xyz

x is second oder
y first order
z first order


And

3x^4y^2 - 5x^2y + 3
x fourth order
y second order
