My laptop wouldn't charge and wouldn't turn on, so I sent it in to a local computer repair shop a week ago to get it repaired.

They now tell me that the hard drive is fried and that I owe them $130.

Do I really owe them anything since they didn't fix my computer and doesn't even turn on?

The problem in the first place is the power source...

I mention the HD because that was the soul reason that I wanted it fixed in the first place. I wanted some files that were on there.

At this point I have no need or want for the laptop so they can keep it.

I’m just curious if I’m obligated to pay them anything.

stand up for your rights and don't pay them a penny.
the law will be on your side in court if they want to take you there. but my guess they won't.

The possible answer here is both yes, and no.

You didn't know what was wrong with your laptop, so you sent it in. They told you it was a fried hard drive and charged you $130. You do realize that a lot of computer repair places charge for evaluations, right? There's a reason they charge.

Laptop hard drives CAN cost $130, depending on the brand and if the hard drive has to be a specific kind (lots of variables here).

My main question is: did they charge you to repair your laptop, or did they charge you for telling you what's wrong with it? If they were supposed to FIX it for $130, that's another story altogether. If they charged you a fee to determine the cause of the problem - you're obligated to pay that.

Yes. Should have come to an understanding with them before you left the computer there. Sounds kind of high for a diagnosis thou. I suggest you find a reputable computer guy who charges about half of what they charge. A lot of places will give you a free estimate of what is wrong. I suggest you use one of them from now on. I build sell and repair computers and, contrary to what some are saying a lot of shops charge you just to diagnose a problem. Geek Squad charges a minimum of $169 to make a house call regardless of if they fix the prob or not. Next time you take your laptop to any shop see what their policy is because you dont just "refuse to pay" for work done if they don't do diagnostics for free.

"They now tell me that the hard drive is fried and that I owe them $130."

They also asked you if you wanted them to replace the hard drive AND you said "No".

So, yes, you have to pay them for the diagnosis and the technician's time. If they're smart, you won't get your PC back until you pay the bill.

No absolutely not! They are ripping you off! A laptop hard drive doesn't, or shouldn't cost $130 until they get the laptop working! You don't know if it will work even after you pay them, so no. Ask them to make it work, otherwise don't pay.
