If a professor chats with his former student online - do you think this is perfectly innocent?

Former is important. No problem there.

Current is potentially an ethical dilemma.

Depends on the age difference. I know as a parent... I would not appreciate my daughters chatting it up with a professor my age. But you should stay out of it........unless your the student chatting with the professor. If he is married I would think that is not appropriate...only if it has to do with school. How would your parents feel about it?

Perfectly fine... no problem. Hey, are you my former student? I am going to fail you!

(actually such behavior is very wrong. If it goes beyond, "Hello", you should probably send an anonymous transcript to the dean).

Why not? I chat with kids I used to look after.

They are former students and they are all adults. It's not your business.
