They are edible. This has been asked many times and usually, a majority of the answers say no or that they are poisonous. Historically acorns have been a very important food worldwide. Before the development of agriculture they probably were one of the most important foods.
Yesthey contain tannin which varies by type. They are usually soaked or boiled in several changes of water to remove the tannin. Then they may be dried and ground into flour or cooked and mashed into a kind of porridge.
There is some evidence that the Italian dish polenta may have originally been acorns. And in Italy pigs are often allowed to forage for them.
I have eaten them, prepared as above but coarsly ground, kind of like cornmeal mush. They were bland with a slight nutty flavor.
Edit: They are harvested when they fall or can be shaken from the tree.

There is a book , "Tom Brown's Guide to Wild Edible and Medicinal Plants" in which he describes how to prepare them. And here is a link to a web site. There are several more, just google "eating acorns".

It's possible to eat them but it takes a LOT of work. They have a chemical in them called tannin that you can use to tan leather, but you need to get rid of most of it before the acorns can be eaten.
I read someplace that Native Americans used to pound acorns into a sort of flour, then rinse it in water to get rid of the tannins and dry it in the sun. Seems like a lot of work for not-particularly-palatable ground nuts, but if it was all you had to eat I suppose you did what you had to do.
