(Torrey Pines is in Del Mar, but close...)

You could go to top of Mt. Soledad, but realistically speaking, La Jolla is too near city lights to have any good place to see stars. San Pasqual Valley or Palomar Mt. might be better choices if you don't mind a little drive, as they're farther removed from light polution. Borrego Springs is a longer drive but a good place.

If you want to stay in La Jolla, Mt. Soledad is probably your best bet. It's a short drive to the top and there is a panoramic view of San Diego and the coastline. For directions and more info go to: http://www.sandiego-romantics.com/romantic-places-in-san-diego.html

There is a place called the Cliffs across the street from UCSD on Torrey Pines. There is no sign or parking lot, although there is a trail. Make sure to take a flashlight because I don't want you to fall down the cliffs. It has happened in the past but the place is secluded and peaceful, although you may run into some college kids playing past their bedtime.
