Apparently, in one of the recent interviews JK Rowling gave as part of her book tour, she answered the similar question of "what Harry's parents did for a job" by explaning that James, Lily (and Sirius too) never had real jobs and lived off of James' inheritance. sounds like spoiled slackers, I know, but since neither of harry's parents lived to their 22nd birthdays and spent most of their brief adult lives either risking their lives for The Order of the Phoenix or hiding from Voldemort because of the prophecy, I guess they can be excused.

so the question behind it though is; why did the Potters have so much money? and it's never really answered. The only real clue is that certain famous wizarding families seem to have a lot of money, and since James and Harry are direct descendants of the Peverells, they possibly just had lots and lots of hereditary money (like Malfoy or Sirius Blacks' family, or like modern-day royalty.)

I like the idea about Dumbledore's money but if you think about it, there really isn't any evidence that Dumbledore had much money. His family seems very middle class and the fact that his father was imprisoned meant that there was no income coming in as the mother stayed home with Ariana. Aberforth has a humble job running a slummy inn and taking care of his goats and Dumbledore was an academic. I'm sure he had money (salaried employee with no living expenses) but not so much that he would have major assets to dispose of. Remember, the invisibilty cloak Dumbledore gave Harry wasn't his, it was James, and Dumbledore had taken it to study.

The fact that Lily and James never had to work; that Harry was left a small fortune; that James' family was well off enough to "take in" Sirius after he ran away from home; and that they were the posessors of a priceless invisibility cloak all suggest that it's definitely Potter family money and not a sneak donation from Dumbledore.

The Potters were an old pureblood family and James was the last of the line. We know, via JKR that he was independently wealthy, but the source of that wealth is not known

Perhaps they had a large accidental death policy? Surely wizards need life insurance too, especially with Voldemort around. :-)
