You start with a TLD or Top Level Domain. .COM is a TLD. There are a number of others such as .ORG, .NET, .MIL, .GOV, etc. Then there are the national TLDs like .US, .UK, .FR, .DE, etc. TLDs are controlled by ICANN who licenses registrars who sell domain names under the TLDs.

Now register your own domain for your businees. Let's say you call it SMITHCO.COM. Your business grows and you open separate North American and European offices. To keep things simple for your customers and make it easier to segment out your network, you create two sub-domains: NA.SMITHCO.COM and EUR.SMITHCO.COM.

That's domains and subdomains in a nutshell, as simply as I can explain it and have it still be relatively accurate.

A website is simply a desination on the world wide web. www.yahoo.com is a website. So is www.microsoft.com

A domain is a group of computers all under the administration of a given organization. A sub-domain us a smaller sub group of computers under the main domain.
microsoft.com is a domain. support.microsoft.com is a sub domain. A web site is an application that runs on a server handing out html documents on port 80 at the given address. WWW.microsoft.com is a website To have a web site you need a name. That name will be the domain name, so yes you need a domain name unless you want people to have to type in and remember your IP address! If you register your domain name most companies that do the registration will park your domain name for you. This means that they will put a pointer in the Domain Name Service records that points to a page tha says it's under construction, for no charge. You then need a computer to put it on. You can do this your self or you can pay some one to put it on their server and they worry about connectivity and maintaining the server. The third thing you will need are the actual content or pages that are going to get served when someone goes to your website.

Domain names in their correct forms do not have www. or whatever it is that prefixes the organization's name, and end with the familiar .com or .org or .net or whatever including country code subfix; they are commonly referred to as TLD.

Subdomains are quite equal to individual host in the domain such as www, they are the same to the users of Internet in general although I think some would argue that subdomains are virtual hosts instead of real individual hosting machines.

Website is a hosting solution within a domain name, the solution either in a virtual host or real configuration.
