I think William Joel would be a very simple, more elegant way to honor your grandmother. It would give you a more sophisticated way to honor Willie, and give your son more nickname options, and a better name to grow up with.

For a boy William or Wilson

For a girl Wilhelmina or Wilma, Wilda or Willa

All with the nickname Willie.

Or for a girl [first name of your choice] Mae

You can name your child after her without literally using "Willie Mae," of course. ;)

Use a similar name or form of one of them as a first -- or MIDDLE ;) -- name. William, Willard, Willis, Wilson, Willoughby, Willa, Willow, Willemina, Wilhelmina, May, Maeve, Mavis, etc. It doesn't have to actually be "Willie Mae," in full, and if you don't care for any of the variations as a first name, you can always honor her with the middle. :) No worries!

Keep your word if you have a girl:
Wilhemina Mae, NN Willie Mae

Boy:
William NN Willie

If you break your promise, you will always remember that for the rest of your life and regret it. It's a great way to honor her memory.

Joy to you!!!

Willie is generally short for something so you name the baby her full name or the masculine version if its a boy and use a different nick name. Or you can use her name as a middle name.

Why not have it as a middle name then, but call the baby by it's first name? My grandmother's name was also Willie....Jonnie Willie Ray was her name.

Just hope for a girl and give her Mae as her middle name. It's a very pretty and feminine middle name and you can make it unique by pairing it with a really great first name.

Is Willie short for Wilhemina? Just bc you promised her to name your child after her doesnt mean it has to be exactly like hers. You could name her Wilhemina and call her Mina. Or feminize it to Wilhemina Joelle.

Go with Joelynn or Joleen for the girl and maybe William for the boys middle name.
