We know that love of luxury is not good and yet succumb to it due to weakness of our mind in respect of self-control..... we therefore criticize ads etc. that try to take undue advantage of our weakness for the sake of undue profits!!

well, i guess it's all in the mind-set. people tend to think and act by the way they were influenced. and it's not unitl 19th century that i think materialism is a condemned subject. i guess because with changing times, material things gets to grow more and prosper, but people who has the advantage of living without any material concepts today find it hard to accept these changes. so the advertising folks suffer from criticism and the consumers are confused. i'm not a lover of luxury since my parents did not (fortunately) lavished our childhood with present and material things. as i grow older, that's thetime i get to notice things, and for a while i got a little materialistic, but then i got slapped in the face by books and studies. i go by the day just by eating, checking the computer and my cellphone and that's it. no ipods for us, mp3, ps, etc. . materialism was never in our genes i guess. .
i think the best way for the message of materialism as a bad thingis to get your message across clearly but be aware of the fact that people live in different generations. =)

As I see, materialism is criticized by non-materialists and embraced by materialists, both of these terms taken in the philosophical sense. But in human terms, all are materialist and non-materialists at the same time: that is, the intellect may indeed incline towards a non-material 'world-view', but the residing human nature, all too material, will remain untouched by it.

We are so prone to judge everything and everyone else before looking at our own self. It's like the way we naturally feel invincible. One thinks, "Death cannot possibly happen to ME." That's the way an individual looks at materialism-it happens to others, but "never me".

It is hard to runaway from money when our basic needs have to be met by it. If there was another way I suppose things could change, but I think no one ever really graduated from kindergarten because they don't know how to share.

Because we just want the STUFF. We don't want to waste a SECOND looking at ads, or walking through a crowded mall. People just want to buy buy buy.
