To me, Oxford and Cambridge are the only universities outside of the U.S. that I've herd of. I'd like 2 no how their athletic rivalry compares 2 the ones over on this side of the pond (i.e. Harvard/Yale, Ohio State/Michigan, USC/UCLA, Georgia/Florida Duke/North Carolina, etc.) I'm pretty sure that the one major difference is how commercially hyped college sports is over here as opposed 2 the like beyond American universities.

Wonderful answer, tony b. Yours 2, neniaf. I was expecting the regatta & football (soccer) competitions 2 b featured in such a rivalry. But what about the student unions? I dunno if students paint their faces, stage rallies or even riot like we do, but how do Oxford & Cambridge students display their school pride? & how do they thumb their noses @ their rival university?

contrary to belief....
Oxford has a rugby team, soccer team, basket ball about the only games they dont play is American football and base ball...
Rivalry is fierce especially in the boat race .. .on the Thames every year..
These two great universities dont have sports schoarships and programes like the US. But they produce some of the top sportsmen and women.
You really have to be in the cities to see the rivalry when they meet for sports events. What you have to realise is that Academics is the more important acivity at Universities in the Uk not sports.. so there are no real sports scholarships. You cannot get into these Universities by being good at sport and have an average grade. You have to have the highest grade and pass entrance exams.
You only really see the boat race on the tv in the UK. Univercity sports dont make it... Soccer is the number one sport in the uk. American football is basically seen as a joke sport. People look at it and see all the helmets and padding and basically laugh and point to rugby Union and say ... see no pads..
Also... the concieted way of calling a sport a world series when no other country is involved with the sport is so funny.... Ie.. World series of Baseball.... worls american football champions... get the point?

Oxford and Cambridge are first and foremost academic universities. They are not sporting clubs. Since the work comes first, I'd be careful about choosing on grounds of sporting prowess. To be honest most sports are played very much on an extra curricular basis and with the long hours that you'd be working, these wouldn't be the focus of your time there.

Universities in the U.K. don't have the type of athletic teams that we have, but the regatta is pretty competitive.
