My algebra 2 class we had 43 grades the first 9 weeks (mostly homework). So far this 9 weeks we have had 16 grades (and were 3 weeks in). She gives us homework atleast 3 days a week plus quizzes, tests, bellringers, and classwork. She doesnt teach us. Thats why she assigns us homework. She thinks we will learn it ourselves by doing homework. Do you think its outrageous to give 16 grades over 2 1/2 weeks and 43 over 9 weeks?

We spend atleast 15 minitues going over the bellringer, and another 15 checking homework, and sometimes even longer. Then if we have anytime left over she will make us write notes for not even 5 mins. She doesnt explain, she just shows us notes and tells us to copy

Instead of complaining in this Forum, why not speak with your school Counselor, or perhaps the Principal?
They're the only people who will get any changes made, not the answerer's here.

I think it's a good idea to give students more graded assignments, especially with math since many students do poorly. For example, in my calc 2 class, we have 5 test, 100 points each and maybe 5 graded worksheets around 15-20 points each. well if you don't understand one concept, it can bury you on the test, giving you a poor grade, impossible to bring up.
On the other hand, She needs to explain what she is telling you to write down. I have missed 1 calc 2 class and looked in the book and was totally lost! I had to go to my professor the next day and she helped me through it.
So it's not crazy to give you all these opportunities to get a good grade (that's what homework is for) but it is crazy for her to expect everyone to learn on their own, that is what she gets paid to do.
I would definitely talk to your parents about the situation so they can bring it to the attention of someone. Although My advanced algebra teacher in high school didn't teach and I said something and the school did nothing, it's better to complain after you have done as much as you can!

The majority of teachers give homework of some type almost every day. The purpose is to reinforce (or practice) the concepts you learned. It doesn't sound unreasonable. I am sure your teacher explains examples of the new work you are to do. And yes, you only learn something by doing it yourself...you are the one doing the learning right?
You would find it odd if a coach expected you to learn to play a sport, such as baseball, without constant practice. The coach does not do the practicing, he may demonstrate but it is for you to practive until you have mastered the game.
Think of it in the same way.

I think that the teacher is preping you for college. My teacher is very much the same. I get homework every night and she's not exctly covering all of the material in class. I think that your teacher is teaching you to be independent with your studies. I you don't understand your homework don't feel compeled to complete it all on your own. Ask for help. In terms of the grade situation. It's better if you have more assignments because it gives you more chances to bring up your average. Trust me the more work you do the better your grade and knowledge of the subject will be.
Hope this helps:)

No, not for that kind of class. The only way to learn is to do the problems. Some professors will make you do homework every day, but won't give you credit for it. You are lucky that she is giving you grades for it. It is easier than relying upon one or two tests, which you could easily bomb.

Not at all. It sounds to me like she's trying to vary the grading to fit several different learning styles so that everyone has a better chance to excel. Math also takes practice, like any other skill -- so she is giving many ways of practicing those skills.
Of course, to get the grades you actually have to DO the work!

yes its outrageous, unless its all required of her. I am a teacher and I know they make us give lots of tests and we feel like we barely have time to teach. But if she is making up these assignments, the reason a teacher SHOULD give tests/etc is to see if hte students understand what she teaches...how long does she teach for each day? I would seriously bring it up to the principal or at least to your parents to talk to the principal...us teachers don't get paid much but we still need to do our jobs, TEACH...
