I live in Australia and am currently renting in Melbourne which is $780 a month and my lease is not up until April 27, 2008.
My Nana just died and I need to move so I can see more of my grandfather and to help out.

I am really desperate to get out of where I am but am unsure of how much it will cost me to cancel my lease early. Can anyone tell me anthing about the process I will have to go through to get out and how much it would cost. I need to be out as soon as possible because I am miserable where I am.

Talk to the landlord. Tell him about the death in the family and their need for you to assist now. Most are not ogres and will let you out of your lease. And in your case, possibly with little penalty if you've been a decent tenant.

When I was a landlord I let a couple of tenants out of their leases without penalty under similar circumstances. They had paid their rent on time and took good care of the place and both left it move-in ready for the next tenant. (And I was able to raise the rent immeciately instead of waiting for nearly a year so it was a pretty good deal for me as well.)

City girl,

figure out ur costs to visit GranPa on week ends v.s. cancelationfees , outstanding rent due, legal fees etc. Contact property management and ask what ur options are.
u may be able to sublease (not best), u may have to pay 2months penalty and months until they release.
visits on weekends may be cheaper and u keep ur job so u have money.
