Sometimes you can find bargain airline flights, but aside from that the cheapest way is Greyhound bus, which will take you anywhere in the US for $99 or less one-way, with 7-day advance purchase. But it would take at least three days on the bus. Lots of great scenery to see, especially if you hit the Appalachians and Rockies in the day, lots of time to read a good book, but on the down side you may arrive as a grubby, burned-out half-zombie, and you may end up sitting part of the way next to a 350-pound woman and her screaming infant.

Check the airline deals if you book ahead you can usually get a good deal.
You could also check with Amtrak but it would take much longer.
