Heart beat is controlled by a pacemaker in the heart itself. The pacemaker is located in the right atrium, in the area called the sinoatrial node (SA node). But the sympathetic nervous system can increase the heart rate. Adrenaline released into the blood stream by the adrenal glands also increases heart rate.

The Vagus nerve provides the heart with parasympathetic input (resulting in a decrease in heart rate).
