Most Vulcans believe that emotions are something to be avoided in favor of logic. There are meditations and excercises designed to purge them of all emotion.

Not all Vulcans believe that but most do.

In ancient Vulcan times, the people were violent and had many wars. Finally a philosopher appeared who saw the pointlessness of this passionate, unreasoned behavior and fashioned the idea of logic to replace emotions. Vulcans are very intelligent and saw the wisdom of this plan. The only exception is what happens to the males every seven years. See "Amok Time" for more details.

A vulcan always acts and thinks based on logic, if they found something that can't or won't be applied with logic, then they would use straight forward thinking to choose the best option to devise a logic solution.

And yes, I think I'm a Star Trek geek, :|

Vulcans not Volcans.

Vulcans believe that logic is the ultimate way to end all conflict and hostility, war, and evil. Therefore, their ancestors decided to suppress their emotions and develop ways to become fully rational beings devoted to pure logic.

Someone who's a bigger Trek geek is going to have to explain how they achieve that, because I have no idea.

They have to take some kind of ritual in order to give themselves over to pure logic (as seen in Star Trek 4)
