I had a guy who would tune it up and get in running every fall but he died. If I have to put it in the shop I may as well buy a new one. I'm thinking it's the carburetor because it will start and run great for a minute or two, then slowly die. I've done this before on other motors-should i remove the carb and clean it, run seafoam or something in the gas, or what?

Start with the simple stuff. Change the gas out, then the fuel filter if there is one, check the gas cap vent to see if it's clogged, then clean the fuel lines, then the carb. It is something in the fuel delivery system. Just a cleaning and replace the plug while you're at it shoud work.

There is most likely a fuel filter on the end of one of the hoses inside the gas tank. Bend a piece of wire into a hook and pull it out. Make sure the filter is clean or replace it. Also make sure that the hoses are in good shape, not bent, flattened ect. If all is well there I would suggest rebuilding the carburetor.

You have done your homework! Your diagnosis is correct! The carburetor needs cleaning.
Next time you are going to "Park" the machine, run a gas stabilizer like "Stabil" through it. This will retard the gas congealing in the carburetor.

check the choke. you need to choke it to start it up, but open the choke once it warms up some. should be a leaver like thing on the engine like coke, 1/2 choke, and run. replace the gas and put in a new plug...i think it will be fine

Could also be a clogged air filter. Remove and clean in solvent like paint thinner.

Start it again and when it starts to die...reach over and loosen the gas cap just a little...if it perks back up and runs...the vent cap is plugged.
