Australia is much closer to the equator than the USA. Connecticut is roughly the same latitude north as Hobart, our most southerly city. Sydney is the same latitude as Atlanta while Brisbane is close to Miami. Anything north of Brisbane is in the tropics and closer to the equator than the USA (except Hawaii).
This means that the sun is ferocious and you will burn very easily. Sunburn is no joke at any time but particularly when you are on holiday. You can get seriously burnt in an hour. Also, the more sun you soak up the greater your chances of skin cancer in later years.
The tanned look is not favourable in Australia and those with deep tans are regarded as idiots. Use 30+ sunscreen; wear a hat and a shirt and sit in the shade if you are outside.

Being very tanned is UNCOOL for young people in Australia. And what a waste of a holiday if you spend it getting a tan - you can get yourself a tan and skin cancer in any solarium anywhere in the world. Why not just make the most of travelling half way around the world - maybe you are visiting friends, or going sightseeing.
If you come to Australia in our summer, ask for sunscreen, or sunblock or blockout - either 30+ or 50+, even if you are not actually lying out in the sun. Wear a broadbrimmed hat.
I hope you have a great time.

I don't know if you mean our Summer or your Summer but it doesn't really matter which you mean. Using Sun Screen and wearing a hat is the sensible thing to do. Skin cancer and melanoma is no joke, nor is painful sunburn. It's a good way to ruin a wonderful holiday.
You would be able to get a really good case of bright red sunburn and peeling no matter when you come here if you're not very careful.
During your Summer, our Winter it would depend on where you go as to how much sun exposure you get.
If you go to the Tropics you'll be bright red in no time.
If you go to Tasmania you won't be sun baking it will be too cold and you'll be rugged up.

I don't recomend it, you could get very sunburn't.
Really tanned skin is a sign of damaged skin, plus a high risk of skin cancer, white is the best look. Cover your self in sun cream.
