Good old wikipedia has a fairly simple explanation actually - it says that Keith Richard and Mick Jagger just came up with "a slow soul song from the viewpoint of a person who is depressed. He wants everything to turn black to match his mood"
The wild thing about the link below is the staggering number of bands who have covered that tune!

It is about a depressed person who's mourning the loss of a loved one. At least that's how I heard the song explained many years ago.

Maddog pretty much hit the nail on the head.

The song is basically his mood being depressed. He wants everything to be black to match his mood. Black being dark, mysterious and a depressing color for most people which pretty much gives it away.

In the song it also sounds like he has a synical personality.

"i see the girls dressed in their summer clothes, I have to turn my head until my darkness goes..."

so on so on

despair and depression over losing someone he loved. The words kinda explain that to me, he's singing about the death of his love.
