x + y = 50
y = 50-x

4y - 2x = 8
4(50-x) -2x= 8
200-4x-2x=8
200-6x=8
-6x=-192

x(big number)=32
y(small number)=18

Let a = the larger number
Let b = the smaller number

The sum of two #s is 50: a + b = 50
Twice the larger # (2a) is subtracted from 4 times the smaller # (4b), the result is 8: 4b - 2a = 8

Set the first equal to a:
a + b - b = 50 - b
a = 50 - b

Solve these equations simultaniously by plugging your a-value into the 2nd equation:
4b - 2a = 8
4b - 2(50 - b) = 8
4b - 100 + 2b = 8

Collect like-terms:
6b -100 = 8

Solve for b:
6b = 108
b = 108/6
b = 18

Now use your b-value to find a:
(remember that a = 50 - b)
a = 50 - 18
a = 32

so a = 32 and b = 18
(Sorry if I over-simplified! :) Just trying to help!)

L = larger
S = smaller
L + S = 50
4S - 2L = 8

L = 50 - S
4S - 2(50-S) = 8
4S -100 + 2S = 8
6S = 108
S = 18
L = 32
check
4*18 - 2*32 = 8
72 - 64 = 8 checks

A x+y = 50

B 4x - 2y = 8
2A 2x + 2y = 100

Add 6x = 108

x = 18
y= 32

x + y = 50
if 4*min(x,y) - 2*max(x,y) = 8

x = 18
y = 32
