The concept of Manifest Destiny.
"God" had put all this land in front of the Americans and so their Destiny manifested (created) was to take the land, as there was no previous owner. The "no previous owner" (as we all know) isn't exactly true. There were Native Americans on the land already, and many Mexicans (who had been conquered by the Spanish) were living on the land that is now the Southwestern United States.

Another factor is economic. The United States was becoming a world economic power, and therefore needed a greater supply of raw materials. This expanse of land 'at the back door' provided those raw materials.

Population growth is another factor for American Expansion. The United States was welcoming in western European immigrants by the (forgive the pun) boat load. There had to be somewhere to put them (other than the quickly growing slums).

Once the western areas of North America had been touched by the Americans, the leaders sought an American Empire, as begun by Monroe (The Monroe Doctrine 'protected Central and South America from European re-colonization, but said naught about American expansionism). This American Empire was (and still is) one of economics and ideological control. This ideology is set forth is the Truman Doctrine of a world that is made "Safe for Democracy".

if you doubt me, look it all up.

The Spanish American War and the Alaskan gold rush.
During the period of American History known as the expansionist period....these two events did a great deal to spur on U.S. acquisition of further territories.

The Spanish American War allowed America to acquire Puerto Rico and control of the Phillipines and Guam. Then American's poured into Alaska for obvious reasons.

Imperialism and the realization that we could control two of the six (relevant) continents. See The Monroe Doctrine. That and war profiteering. That always pushes war. The Phillipienes war was conducted pretty much 100% for the war profiteers.
