I have done two very stupid things and now I have lost face and probably gained a reputation for being a sort of creep among a a rather large but distant group of people. Even though the group that hold this view are far removed from my actual social circle I still feel very ashamed about the whole subject. Is there any way to regain face? or is reputation forever tarnished and impossible to repair?

I would say that the best thing to do in an instant like this, is to wait, things that are said will be said and nothing can be done about that. Time heals all wounds, In a short way to say it just wait,be careful, and just be as nice but not creepy to the people that you did this to. Eventually you won't have to worry about that kind of thing anymore.

Whoa, wait a minute! You have taken the most important step, remorse. You can not change the past, it is gone. The future, we don't know, and the present is but a fleeting movement that was the future, and is now the past. Forgive yourself, we all make mistakes because we are imperfect. If you did not make mistakes, you'd be Perfect and probably not be here on earth. Move on and seek to correct your errors. Guilt is the conscience, like pain is to the body, a warning that you are not content with what you did and you might have harmed yourself or others. If you hurt yourself, forgive yourself; if you hurt someone ask for their forgiveness and if they don't forgive that is their concern, NOT yours. By the way, there are No stupid things, just human errors, your label of "stupid" is a negative label which interferes with resolution. That is all we can do in this limited state of imperfection in which we live. Good luck and God love us imperfect beings, NO MATTER WHAT!

Reputation is everything and you must guard it with your life. It depends on the level and extent of your damage. Learn from this mistake and move on. The more you try to justify or cover it, the worse it will get. Just let it be and try and indirectly repair the damage, by acting the opposite.

People do stupid things, some more than the others. You will notice, that the people who are NOT quick to forgive people for their transgressions are hypocrites. They have transgressed themselves. The people that know that a person's reputation is not damaged by a couple of mistakes, are the ones that will truly afford you those small mistakes. Those are the ones that truly should matter to you.

The opinion of society is a shallow, fickle thing. The great essayest William Hazlitt stated that the opinion of the world about you is determined primarily by........................clothing. Yep. You can be the foulest, most black-hearted murderin' cheat on the face of the earth, but rent a tuxedo and a limosine and the world is at your feet. Jack London's first trip to England, he was feted in London the first night, couldn't wait to escape, went to a pawnshop and bought some workman's clothes and prowled about the city. Unbelievable contrast in the way he was treated. Forget their opinion. It is a chimera.

Your reputation is NOT forever tarnished. Listen, give yourself a break....you are HUMAN, just like the rest of us and therefore will make mistakes. One measure of a person is his or her ability to LEARN from his or her own mistakes. Find the "gift" in your blunder and go on enjoying life.

We all make mistakes at one point or another in our lives. If you feel like you've injured someone, apologies can go a long way to bring them solace and comfort.
Don't worry about your reputation. It's only an illusion.
The fact that you feel shame shows nobility. Cherish it and always strive to improve yourself :)

I suspect you think about this a lot more than they do. Just behave yourself and time will even it out.
