I worked in a factory cafeteria feeding 3 lines of 90 people. I was 19 and saving money to go to nursing school. I prepared all the food for the steam table (baked, deep-fried, grilled, etc.), served it, ran the trays and silverware through the dishwwasher, cleaned everything up and washed all the pots and pans. One lady ran the cash register and emptied ashtrays and that was all the help she gave me. The last night I worked before starting school, she emptied the ashtrays into carboard boxes in the corner behind where she sat on a stool at the register. I was up to my elbows scrubbing pots and she keeps telling me how hot she is. I finally had enough of her complaining and I turned to tell her to try working and see how hot she got. All I saw were flames reflecting in the refrigerators and freezers behind her! Just then the sprinkler system turned on. The funny thing was she got her hair done once a year and that was the day she had it done. She looked like a drowned rat!
My husband was in the fire company and they had a blast teasing me when they arrived that I was trying to burn the place down cause I was leaving.

I was a candystriper in the children's ward of a hospital. I thought I wanted to be a nurse at the time. It was very rewarding work. I only got a small stipend, but I loved the job.
