This is a stereotype. It is true that a lot of guys hate it but not all of us. I am a guy and I have no proplem asking for directions. The reason some guys hate it is because they are embarrased in front of their girl. We have a primordial instinct to act like the provider and the leader. If we are lost how can we lead? Asking for directions is admitting that you are lost and that means admitting that you are not a man. I, however, am more secure in my masculinity and asking for directions that I am not ashamed or scared of being embarrased in front of my girlfriend. Just agree with him and that he knows where he is. He is obviously sensitive to female opinions toward him. The male opinions are even more influencing.

Your question should probably read "Why do SOME guys hate asking for directions?"
It makes them look like they might not be in control. It might be that they like exploring new turf a little bit. It might be that they have a map and don't need to ask directions. Now its probably because they have a GPS system an internet mapping of practically the whole entire land mass of the Earth, so maybe its not that big a deal anymore when you can find out where you are in seconds, and where you need to go to get where you are going.

This is a question that dates back to the origins of mankind
Men would go hunting while women would pick berries etc.
The men would see who was the best hunter, and e was the most honored in the tribe... There was no such thing as help
This mindset caused them to think that asking for help is an insult to ones capability to be independent
So this is just one of those things that has carried down through the ages :)

Men prefer to "fix things," whereas women like to have things fixed for them. Being lost is like having something broken, and while men want to fix the situation by finding their own way, women are used to being lead and told what to do, so asking directions comes easily for them.
