Schubert- Death and the Maiden
Ravel - String Quartet (only one)
Mozart - The Hunt and The Dissonant
Dvorak - The American Quartet
Mendelssohn - Eb Quartet
Verdi - String Quartet (only one)
for Beethoven or Haydn pick any of the late works

Beethoven's late quartets are good, but in my opinion you can't get better than the Bartok quartets. They are my favorite string quartets and among the best things that he wrote.

The most recognized composers for string quartet are Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, and Schubert.
If Strauss is the Waltz King, and if Sousa is the March King, I guess those four composers should be called the string quartet tetrarchs.

I really like the Borodin String Quartet #2 - That is where the song "And This Is My Beloved" is based from - a very pretty song! I just listened to that a few minutes ago...

Well, personally, I'd have to say it is Beethoven's late string quartets, ranging from op. 127 to op. 135. Not only is this some of the greatest music written for strings, it is my humble opinion that it is arguably the greatest music ever written. Op. 131 is considered by many to be his greatest, however, I personally find op. 130 to be my favorite.

Beethoven - Grosse Fuge
Mozart - K465 ("dissonance" quartet)
Bartok - Quartets #4-6

I don't know if it's the best ever, but don't forget that Barber's adagio for strings was originally for quartet! (and, IMHO, it's much more powerful that way!)

Most people I know have had to arrange it themselves (which is still technically against copyright rules as you are doing it without permission). Anything that is published needs to have permission from the coyright holder of the song(s). And my guess is that would be pretty expensive to puchase those rights since her music is so popluar. Or maybe someone did ask and was turned down. Who knows?
