Well, IMHO the answer is unfortunately both. Truth told with kindness and in a sincere effort to help can be liberating to some but hurtful to others. Truth told in order to castigate is almost always hurtful.

Truth is also subjective. For instance if your friend shows you a picture of his girlfriend that he has told you is "sooo hot" for the last week but you find her completely heinous, then which is truth? The answer is both, but from different points of view. You could tell him your truth but that would be hurtful and what would be the point. Or you could say something like "Wow I can see that you really have a thing for her, that is so cool", which is also truth and is not hurtful.

The term "The truth will set you free" means that to accept the truth about oneself (a personality flaw for example) can be liberating because it is the first step to change. "The truth hurts" is also introspective as we do not like to face our personal flaws, but again may be necessary in order to facilitate change for the good.

Knowing the truth allows you to make proper choices. (Good)
Hearing the truth does hurt & can be painful (bad) but after you work through the pain you are free to fix up whatever was wrong because you are now free(good). For example my husband was a compulsive gambler but hid the fact for a long time(bad). Not understanding his behaviour caused a lot of pain. When the truth came out I could understand why he did what he did and behaved so badly(good). I was free to decide if I could put up with it or not and I divorced (good).
Make sense? When you have truth you can do anything.
Truth is empowerment.

its good even if its bad. No matter what a lie is always worst than the truth. Truth can hurt but at least you have it out there and in time it will all be ok. =]

The truth is always good.
It may not feel good sometimes but in the end it will be.
When the truth hurts it is usually a short term thing.
When the truth sets you free it is usually a long term thing.

The truth will set you free, but not if you use it to damage someone. All the things you screwed up, goes to a shrink or confession. At last resort, the bartender in Des Moines.

Truth is definitely a good thing. It becomes bad only when it is something you don't want to hear.

The truth does NOT HAVE to be painful...its all about attitude. If you have an open mind and are wiling to continue to grow, having someone tell you that your teeth are green will NOT hurt. If you believe it is OK to have green teeth, this truth will not hurt you. If someone with green teeth tells you it is not OK to have green teeth, what would you think?

You are creating a complicated question out of an already complicated issue: the truth is ultimately but not altogether good.
