Simplify each expression:

28 - a + 4a




I think I know how to do it, but I just want to make sure.

ok, you have a 28 and a number with an "a"

think of it this way

you have 28 steaks and 4 apples, you take an apple away, whats left

28 steaks and 3 apples, because you cannot combine steaks with apples, they are two seperate food groups

first you dont do anyhting to 28 because is has no like term but -a and positive 4a both have an "a" so you add them together thus creating 28+3a. you get 3a because a negative 1(or in this case a) plus a positive 4 is equal to 3.
