Unfortunately no political party has a platform in line with Catholic social teaching.
The Catholic Church is pro-life in the widest sense. This is often called a "Consistent Ethic of Life."
This pro-life stance stresses the highest regard for dignity of human life including that of:
+ All people in objecting to unjust war and nuclear arms. (closer to Democratic platform)
+ The unborn in objecting to to abortion, in vitro fertilization, frozen embryos, embryonic stem cell research, and cloning (closer to Republican platform)
+ The elderly, sick and dying in objecting to assisted suicide and euthanasia (closer to Republican platform)
+ Prisoners in objecting to the death penalty (closer to Democratic platform)
+ The poor and minorities in supporting social justice issues (closer to Democratic platform)
Some Catholics are enthusiastically anti-abortion and align themselves with the Republican party.
When you look at the big picture, the Democratic party supports more "Catholic" issues so some Catholics are Democrats.
Neither party follows all Catholic teachings.
For more information, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church, sections 2259 and following: http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text/pt3sect2chpt2art5.htm#2259
With love in Christ.

First of all, I was a practicing Catholic for 50 yrs. That is my credentials. I am an independent-moderate as political. I have studied both parties for over 50years. They are basically the same. The Republican party is just like the Catholic faith. Both are "DO AS I SAY, NOT AS I DO!!" The hypocrisy in the church is readily available, through its actions on its core beliefs. Divorce, Homosexuality, Pedophile Priests,Birth Control, Gambling, and Humanity. On the Republican side, once you eliminate the pedophile priests, and insert pedophile politicians, you have the exact same scenario! Both the Republicans and the Catholic Church, share the abominations of all the characteristics of the subjects I have mentioned. They will tell you they are opposed to all the subjects in public conversations. However, you will find their actions in private life , are the complete opposite!! The Hypocrisy of both, have no ends! The Democrats at least admit to what they are ,and represent. The Republicans and the church are nothing but a misrepresentation, and a LIE! SOLOMON

gay marriage Catholics - NO Republicans - NO Democrats - specific Abortion Catholics - NO Republicans - NO (nonetheless some do) Democrats - specific Prayer is colleges Catholics - specific Republicans mixed Democrats - NO i think of that in case you circulate down line by using line on all the moral matters and teachings of the Catholic Church you will locate that the republicans are greater consistent with their teachings than the democrats. Nancy Pelosi claims to be a Catholic yet helps gay marriage and abortion, there's no way that a individual could be a Catholic devoid of following the training of the Church. JFK replaced into the 1st (ok, in elementary terms) Catholic president yet he replaced into, allegedly, screwing around with Marilyn Monroe

it seems the republican party has a higher percentage of catholic voters voting for them than democrats. At least since Carter. "In 1994, 52 per cent [of catholics] supported the GOP, a rate higher than the national average"
I found an article online but Yahoo won't let me post the link. try googling "Republican Party more Catholic than Democrats"
Oh and ps to the other responders: Not all catholics vote based the abortion issue. Some are actually more than single issue voters. Some catholics identify more with the principles of equality and giving and doing good works (i.e. catholic charities) and many of those tend to identify themselves as Democrats. There are plenty of Democrats who are catholics. The Kennedy's come to mind.

Very neat, concise, answer from imacatholic, but I would make a few amendments to that answer. Actually, imacatholic, the death penalty does not go against Catholic teaching per se. Aquinas argues that state may execute criminals for the sake of the common good:
"Every part is directed to the whole, as imperfect to perfect, wherefore every part exists naturally for the sake of the whole. For this reason we see that if the health of the whole human body demands the excision of a member, because it became putrid or infectious to the other members, it would be both praiseworthy and healthful to have it cut away. Now every individual person is related to the entire society as a part to the whole. Therefore if a man be dangerous and infectious to the community, on account of some sin, it is praiseworthy and healthful that he be killed in order to safeguard the common good, since "a little leaven corrupteth the whole lump” (1 Cor. 5:6)."
(Summa Theologiae, II, II, q. 64, art. 2).
"The fact that the evil ones, as long as they live, can be corrected from their errors does not prohibit that they may be justly executed, for the danger which threatens from their way of life is greater and more certain than the good which may be expected from their improvement.
They also have at that critical point of death the opportunity to be converted to God through repentance. And if they are so obstinate that even at the point of death their heart does not draw back from malice, it is possible to make a quite probable judgment that they would never come away from evil.”
(Summa contra gentiles, Book III, chapter 146)
The anti-capital punishment position of the Church is not an infalible teaching, unlike the Church's stance on abortion.
In response to Mike's question, Howard Dean, chairman of the DNC, just proclaimed that the Democratic Party is the party of universal salvation, saying "there are no bars to heaven for anybody." (http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1107/6847.html)
This of course directly contradicts Church teaching.

Links? How about logic? The Catholic church is against gay marriage and abortion, yet the Democratic Party is an outspoken advocate of both. That alone makes the Republican Party more Catholic by default.

Read the Bible. Pay special attention to the commandment thou shall not kill. Look at Democrats and Republicans positions on abortion. That should answer your question.

The Republicans believe in the sanctity of life just as the Catholics do. They do not believe in abortion.
