If his snoring is really loud and disruptive, chances are good that he has a condition called sleep apnea, which MUST be taken seriously. Untreated sleep apnea not only stresses both the snorer and everyone else in the house who can't get a good night's sleep, it can also lead to heart malfunction and death! Contrary to popular belief, people who are not overweight CAN have sleep apnea, and it can kill normal-weight people as fast as obese ones. Nasal strips, sprays, etc will not help an apnea sufferer.

Apnea is easily treated with the use of a night-breathing aid called a CPAP. He must see a sleep doctor before he can get a CPAP, as they have to be individually adjusted, but most insurance covers the cost. CPAP eliminates snoring 100% and keeps his heart from being damaged. Surgery is very rarely used to treat apnea, as the success rate is not that good.

Please ask him to have his doctor to refer him to a sleep doctor or sleep clinic ASAP. These facilities often have a long waiting list, and procrastinating can really damage his health. Do it today.

This is actually very serious, and you need to be firm with him that he IS going to get a sleep study done! Sleep apnea patients often are in denial about their condition, as they don't hear their own snoring. He will have to make some adjustments, but he will feel so much better (and so will you) that he will later be glad you pushed him. I speak from experience -- I didn't believe I snored until a friend I was staying with told me the same thing my spouse had been complaining about for months.

I don't know if this is the case, but sometimes when people snore tons, they have sleep apnea, where they stop breathing at night for short periods of time but it's life threatening and they have to be tested at the doctor by being hooked up to a machine and monitering their sleep. This probably isn't the case, but i knew someone who snored extremely loud and he had sleep apnea

Maple just laid down the correct answer. I saw a Pulmonary Dr. initially. He ordered the sleep study in a specialized hospital. He read the results and my second sleep study was with a CPAP machine tailored to my breathing patterns. I've been through three different CPAP machines in a 12 yr. span. Wore one completely out.

It stops my snoring completely. I'm 6' 4" 215 lbs. PLEASE: They ( Dr's) do not fry your uvula out to stop you from snoring. Someones been reading too many Cosmopolitan dime novels.

Get him to see his doctor - there is usually a medical cause for snoring. Or if he doesn't agree, there is an anti-snoring pillow available on the market - but could be expensive!

There are alot of contributing factors to snoring. Being over weight, smoking or having a deviated septum are a few things.

If he smokes ask him to stop. If he is over weight, ask him to go on a diet.

The strips - the sprays - the "magic potions" they sell on T.V. do not work.

I feel for you - there is nothing worse then the rythmic buzz saw of someone snoring.

he has to see a doctor (by the way does he stop breathing for some seconds then breathes/snores again - that is dangerous and needs medical attention soon).

There is different medical solutions, he should see the doctor and ask for a referral to a sleep clinic and he may be asked to stay for one night.

a good thick pillow will stop it altogether....if you do not want to go to that extreme there are several things they could do, including a pressure mask that can be worn at night, this mask exerts positive pressure, keeping the airway open so that the person no longer snores

Many men have the little piece of skin (uvula) in the back of the throat removed via laser, as that's what vibrates, causing the snoring sound.

if its a serious problem, he can get his tonsils removed- thats what causes snoring. if that isnt an option, you can buy a patch you put on your arm that stops snoring. try a local target or regular drug store.
