A good portion of Al Gore's appeal is in the fact that he now spurns politics. Since we have began to associate political aspirations with dishonesty, anyone who spurns politics, particularly when they seem like they would have a chance, seems more honest then those out there begging for our vote. If Al Gore ran for president much of his following would believe he planned too all along and worry that he played them. He would lose half his support instantly. Then there are still many who never have trusted him and they would fuel the fires.
He could run but he would lose monumentally. I seriously doubt if he even has a desire to run. He is more successful as an activist then he was as a politician.

Added: Alvaro, does that mean we can go back to polluting our planet with absolutly no regard and just tell god he has to clean up the mess? Are you saying God is like housecleaning at the motel 6? I won't discount the divine but I think we should clean our own mess. If god helps anyone, he helps those who have the sense to help themselves.

Al Gore can run as what ever he wants, really.

We all know that he'll just run us into another Bill Clinton legacy of setting us up for disaster. America needs another 20 years of Republican leadership, or at least Democrats with an openly, unquestionable "walk with a big stick" (with the means to use it while not afraid to upset their protester voters and especially the MEDIA) foreign policy...is there such a thing? A Democrat with teeth that would KEEP terrorists on the run? Sounds like Sci-Fi.

Yes he can run, no he cant win. No I wouldn't vote for him?
Al Gore is another silver spoon moron, never had a job, except for a lobbyist for his dreaded tobacco industry.
Now he wants you to believe the sky is falling, global warming. His followers don't realize he the is head of Generation Investment Management (PRIVATE MUTUAL FUND) trying to get tax payer money for his personal use. I wonder who invests other than tax payers?

I think most people would remember how he tried to overturn an election to his favor and demand recount after recount when every recount showed he lost. He's a sore loser.

And now with this "global warming" scam, I think most are pretty fed up with that clown.

But yes, he could probably run as an independent. I just don't think anyone would vote for him.

Hillary might lose, Obama might lose, and Al Gore might lose. citation: the election of 1912; Taft (the incumbent), Wilson (the democratic challenger), and Roosevelt (the very commonplace former president and Nobel Peace prize winner). Wilson wins, Roosevelt 2nd, and Taft third.

Yes, he can run.

But I would not vote for him unless he would clearly and emphatically state that he learned something very important from having the Sup. Ct. rule against him. He would have to state that he learned a lot about the evil of judicial activism; and that in his effort to understand how he lost before the Cout, he has realized that all judicial activism is bad, not just conservative judicial activism. If he would say that he has learned that Roe v. Wade was an invalid interpretation of the Constitution -- if he would explain why it is invalid -- then I would be very strongly inclined to vote for him.

Fat chance, though.

Al Gore is clinically insane. He cannot ever be allowed to hold public office again.

The Reverend Algore is a useless con-artist but I'd vote for him in a heartbeat if it would stop Queen Hillary. Algore is a joke but Queen Hillary is flat out dangerous.

I think it would be complicated for him to be taken seriously by people with conservative leanings if he ran as an independent. However, I do think that he would have a very good chance of winning, as he's pretty much been right about a lot of things.
