i am putting a lift kit on my truck and the suspension kit says a new pitman arm is recommended. do i need it and was exactly does it do?

The pitman-arm is what connectes the steering gear box, wheither power or manaul steering, to the darg-link, witch connects to the tie-rod. So in-short yes you need a pitman-arm and you need one that is the right lenght for the lift you are putting on. good luck

Yes, you do need a NEW pitman arm, only because the factory one is built to fit the factory suspension specifications, and is not strong enough nor meant for your lift kit. Hence the aftermarket.

And yes, the pitman arm is absolutley neccessary. It is what connects the gear box to the steering arm, and without it your wheels would not turn.

Lowers the conrol point of the steering system so that it doesn't bind up.

And yes, you need to replace it if you're lifting more than three inches on the suspension.
