I know a lot of people say wearing horizontal stripes make you look wider, or fat and wearing vertical stripes make you look taller and thinner. I am already tall (about 5'8) and about average weight...would wearing horizontal stripes still make a tall person look fat?

I used to be SO scared of horizontal stripes for this reason!
That was until a sales assistant bought me this red and white horizontal striped V neck tshirt to try on with some shorts. Bought the shirt straight away! Does not make me look any bigger in the slightest. One of my fave shirts now. And I always get compliments.
HOWEVER the stripes are pretty thin in width. I have tried on shirts where the stripes were thicker. And I have noticed that these arent as nice and do make you appear A LITTLE bigger.
So. yes. Don't be scared of horizontal stripes. Just make sure the width of the stripes are thin (if that makes any sense)

Well it all depends on the colours and sizes of the stripes. Blantant, thin, black and white stripes going across your torso horizontally have more of a chance of making you look thicker rather than thick pink and red stripes.

The only way to really know what looks good on you, though, is to go shopping and if you see a striped shirt you like, try it on! And you could always bring a friend along or a trusted family member that would be willing to judge how you look for you if you can't tell by looking in the mirror.

From what I know, horizontal stripes tend to make you look larger while vertical one tends to make you taller. It's the same principle as wearing uniform color. I'm 6"8 and when I wear only black, I look like 42374929347923"5 tall. It's the same for vertical stripe. Horizontal stripes will break the continuity of your body, so you will look shorter and "bigger".

That's my mathematical theory about it o_o....

Horizontal stripes make you look wider [wear if you are tall and thin and don't want to look so tall for some reason].

Vertical stripes make you look taller and thinner.

Hope this helps ;o)

They make you look wider, but if your fit you should look ok. I was a size 12 and 5'2 when I bought a sweater with horizontal stripes. It was a of the shoulder dark gray with thick black stripes. I got it from NY & Co. I got so many compliments, I paired it with some gray tailored cuffed wide leg pants. Similar to the high waist pants, in style right now.

I don't think you're going to look fat in horizontal stripes, but on some body types their flattering well others there just not. So choose carefully and I'm sure you'll look just fine in stripes since your neither fat nor extra skinny and you're tall so I'm sure you could pull it off!

If you are average weight then horizontal stripes shouldn't be a problem. I think they mean that if you are already overweight, horizontal stripes tend to accentuate this. Also, pin stripe pants on a heavier person accentuates too many curves in places that you'd rather hide.

Yes, but that doesn't mean it necessarily that will make you look bad, if you're thin and tall probably will not affect you so much.
It also depends in the stripes, if you go for stripes try the wider you can in bold solid color.
