Because it can be amended. Our society has changed since 1776, but our government is able to amend the Constitution to reflect modern beliefs.
The basic tenets of the Constitution are based on freedom . . . that the rights of citizens are equal to the power of elected politicians. Democracy and freedom are benefits from the men and women that have given their lives to protect freedom.
Every member of the Armed Services performs and oath . . . "That they will support and defend the Constitution of the United States" . . .

The constitution was written to be a living document, in other words it can be changed to keep up with the changes of the times and situations.
Our forefathers did have some insight didn't they?

it has survived on paper, but take a look at the tenth amendment and look to see if the power to run all these social programs by the federal government is granted to them anywhere in the original document or the bill of rights. challenge your teachers. they are not very smart people. watch out if you are too smart they will put you on Ritalin.
