Start by adding x to both sides:
16+x=-9-17
Then subtract 16 from both sides
x=-9-17-16
x=-42
Now:
16=-(-42)-9-17 or 16=42-9-17
16=16

First combine like terms... basically get x all by itself...

16+9+17=-x-9-17+9+17
42=-x

divide by -1

x=-42

check:

-(-42)-9-17=16
42-9-17=16

you are right!
