it doesn't. vehicle tires can hold up to 100psi, depending on the tire. Bicycle tires are what, 20-30.

The contact area of a bicycle tire is a whole lot smaller (width) so more air is used. Some small car tires are rated to 35psi.

the contact area of the bicycle tire is smaller than the car tire. so you need alot of pressure in your bicycle so that it can support the weight of the rider.

Advanced road bikes (racing bikes) can have pressures in the 90 - 100 psi range (sometimes higher). I think it does this for more for aerodynamic and friction reasons. The high pressure allows the least amount of tyre contact with the road giving less friction and more speed.
