...and furthermore, does it annoy you that some people seem to think that it's a dating site, like match.com? It's happened to me a few times, I just want to know if any others out there have been in similar situations.

Yes. And Facebook is a dating site, to some extent, since people can express an interest in dating on their profiles. It's completely up to you to decide what to do about random messages, adds, and pokes.

You might just use Facebook with friends you know but remember other people might be looking to meet new friends, whether it's for fun or dating.
