it is a weird canned "food" product than I quess is intended to be spread on crackers or bread. It looks scary

Yes, we rednecks do eat weird stuff. It's pretty awful, now that I think about it, but we used to think it was tasty. We made nice little canapes on a soda cracker and thought we were living good. It was yummy on one slice of white bread that you buttered first and then smeared the red devil on. Cut it in thirds and we had another canape.
Oh, how about Vienna Sausages and Smoked Oysters from the can.

War, I guess.
I just moved to Korea from the States, and SPAM is popular here. It's in convenience stores, and has a huge section in the grocery store. Different varieties. Gift sets for Korean Thanksgiving. It's also popular as a filling for a sushi-type roll called gimbap.
A few people told me that it became popular during less prosperous times, just stayed that way.

I have to admit....I LOVE that stuff ! I only "splurge" on it once or twice a year, however, because it's terrible nutrition-wise. Slap it on some bread with a little MIracle Whip....mmmmm....
And I'm not a redneck (as another answerer suggested), but I do have some hillbilly roots :)

It is not the most delicious thing to make a sandwich with, as I have eaten it. I compare it to deviled ham. I ate it when I wanted a snack and didn't wanted to cook anything.

Slap a little mayo in it and spread it on your bread.iI's not that bad , fills the hunger if you have to eat it.According to some people I guess I'm a redneck lol as I've eatten it,when I was a kid
