This is a question with about 4,000 possible different answers if you take several things in to account. It is also virturally impossible for someone to say "these are best" beacuse each person has a different idea of what sounds good, and you have no idea what kind of equipment they're using.

Since you posted in music and music players, and the going trend seems to be ipod's and other portable media devices, I am going to answer the question assuming this is what you're wanting headphones for.

I personally have one of the last original ipod video's made (before it became iPod Classic) and, like many people, I didn't care for the original earbuds that came with the unit. I am also REALLY picky about my audio and have spent tons of money in the past looking for headphones.

When it came to my iPod..I had done a bit of research before I bought a pair, and I settled on Shure E3C's...yes, they're expensive, and rather than just sit over your ear, you jam them in your ear-canal..not to mention they're expensive..however, i found them to be very comfortable and exactly what my iPod needed. Nice bass, clear highs..and the lovely ear-plug like design blocks most outside sound..which is a downside, with these things on and music going, you really can't hear anything around you, even on public transit.

While I've not listened to the slightly more cost-effective E2C's, I would also consider them a safe-bet for a decent pair of portable phones. The Shure's are also well-made.

Now, if you're looking for a nice pair of headphones for say, your computer or stereo system...Sennheiser makes some top-notch stuff. I bought my pair 4 years ago, and I still have them..and I've not felt the need to upgrade...so I haven't tested the newer models lately, but I haven't heard a model I did not enjoy, even their wireless headphones are lovely.

However, going for complete over the top best...Sennheiser has this thing called the Orpheus system, which has since been discontinued..but they were basically electrostatic headphones..which don't work on the same principals as traditional headphones. They also cost about $13,000 with the amplifier costing around $20,000.

There are now several makers of electrostatic headphones, along with many different electrostatic headphone amps..and a couple of DIY plans for both..however, the quality of the headphone amp plays a role..in this.

I hope I didn't confuse you a whole lot.

If you ask a dozen people you will get ten different answers.

Sennheiser are amongst the most respected.

Listen to a few different models, not only Sennheiser but the "best" ones which other answers will inevitably give, at a good dealer.

Take with you a c.d. of a good recording of instruments which you are familiar with in real life.
Does it sound like a real violin, for instance, or does it sound like a recording of a violin.
In other words, how convincing is the illusion the 'phones create.

As they say, "let your dealer guide, but let your ears decide".
