I am getting ready to buy a house. My girlfriends ***** of a mom put this stupid idea in her head to get a receipt for her half of the payment every month. THe house is in my name only. If we were to split up she thinks that she would be in titled to part of the house because of these receipts. Is this true? I live in Ohio in case anyone was wondering.

Better be careful . If you buy the house, even though it is in your name, if her payment goes toward the mortgage she is helping pay off equity. So, buy the house yourself, in your name only and charge your girl friend rent. Make sure that the girl's name never appears on any mortgage payment receipt from the lender.You should get expert opinion from a real estate attorney.

Not an OH lawyer, but an absent an agreement to the contrary, her receipt is probably for rent only. Better to get the understanding more clear or even in writing now, than wait for the inevitable dispute later.

Are you expecting her to pay half the mortgage or charging
her rent? Put it CLEARLY IN WRITING and have her sign it.
Then give her a receipt every month stating Mortgage Payment or RENT payment. Because if you mark it Mortgage Payment she is entitled to half. So make it very clear that it is not MORTGAGE that she is paying. and make up a Rental Lease, you can find them on-line.

Short answer: Yes.

There are more factors here, but pretty much if you and your gf break up, a judge could agree that she is entitled to a percentage of the equity.

But, if she is helping you pay your mortgage, isnt that fair?

it depends, what is ur common law timeline and did u purchase the house while you two were together?
