They are not the same animal.

Opossum live in North America.

Possum live in Australia, New Guinea and introduced to New Zealand. There are about 64 different species.

They are both marsupials but they are different species. It is just here in the US due to the different ways people talk, at times Opossum comes out of the mouth without the "O".

Depends; while people in the US use the terms interchangeably for Didelphis marsupialis, there is an animal in Australia called a "Possum" which is not the same thing at all as the American Opossum. It's also a marsupial, but there the resemblance ends..

interior the Americas, the words are interchangeable regardless of the actual undeniable reality that i imagine "opossum" is extra formal. In Australia there are better than twenty species said as "possums" which contain possums, pygmy possums, honey possums, gliders and cuscuses. There are extra species on the island of modern Guinea. New Zealand also has possums that were presented from Australia yet at the prompt are a pest.
