Whenever possible, yes. There are times when people, through no fault of their own, need help. Loss of job, illness, inadequate income even though working etc. With the economy being what it is, there are going to be a number of people that will need help, especially during the winter months. I think that where there is a true need, help should be provided. I do not believe that there are nearly as many free loaders as others on this site seem to think.
IN has had many foreclosures & more on the way. I have seen how apartment owners & those who have rental housing have raised their rents excessively in the past few months. This is pure greed & will cause many to need help. The owners don't care, the tax payer can just foot the bill for those in need!

Like a debate thing? hmmm
Every family should support itself. Unfortunately, everyone runs into some hard times once in a while, due to illness, loss of employment, underemployment, etc. so there should be a support system available to help in those times of need. Note I said HELP, not a permanent solution by any means, with disabilities being one exception to the "permanent" part. Some disabilities are bad enough that the person is unable to support themselves.

In an ideal world, every family would indeed support themselves. In the real world, jobs are outsourced, pregnancies are unexpected, breadwinners die, etc. Sometimes people need help. For an example, years ago a cousin of mine found herself single with a small child. She had been abandoned by her fiance. She bit the bullet and went on public assistance because without it, she and her little girl would have starved. She used the time to back to school and when she had a degree and a decent job, she went off public assistance and supported her own family.

I'm a little confused about your question but I will give my input anyways. I personally am a single parent. I support my family with out any financial support from welfare or any of those programs. I live pay check to pay check just like a majority of Americans. It's harder to support our families if we live beyond our means. Families should support themselves because those that don't support them we end up taking care of them. We pay for them with out taxes. All the woman that continue to have babies and stay on welfare is just a shame. They get all the help but when I need a little bit of help from the Government I can't get it because according to them, I make too much money. That's bull shyt!

It is hard to seperate the one that are in need, from the ones that are abusing the system. At the very least, I think we shoudl term limit the amount of time one can get assistance from the goverment, so you don't have 15-20 years of the same people collecting, and make people show real cause that they are in need.

You may be against it, but that is likely only because you have yet to pay into a system of healthcare, insurance, schooling, etc. Combined expense for me on those items is nearly $900 a month....while other pay zero. Doesn't seem fair to me.

Yes and for the most part, most families used to until the voices telling everyone they couldnt achieve started becoming so obnoxiously loud.
America used to be known for hard work, family values, and independence. I dont have a problem with a safety net for those TRULY in need but it should only be a temporary thing. Stop working to convince people that they cannot achieve and watch what happens.

Is your speech an argument against this...or are you generally just against this?

The overall goal of a government is to make sure everyone can support themselves...but government aid is available to be a temp solution. Unfortunately it has become a permanent solution for so many.

Isn't that the goal of a family? Anything less than supporting the family is no longer an adult but a child. Self Sufficient is what the adults in the family should be teaching.

That depends on what you are talking about. Do you mean financially, emotionally, physically, what do you mean?

If you are talking financially, then for the most part yes. There are times, though, when we fall on hard times and have no other way to pull ourselves out than to ask for help.

Emotionally, yes, but everyone should support each other.

Physically it depends on the terms. Each family should help each other out when it comes to certain things, but there again, everyone should be that way towards everyone.

why would you be against being self sufficient? You think the rest of us should raise your children. That became your job the day you decide to have a child. You think the rest of us should financially support you. Centuries ago people who could not take care of themselves financially were beggars.
are you speaking of emotional support? we become strong emotionally by standing on our own two feet. and not letting anyone else knock our feet out from under us. Yes, it is okay to have friends, churches, etc.. to prop us up but eventually we need to step out and take care of ourselves.
